Major Hospital Foundation's Internal Campaign
  Quick Links

You may have heard about the internal campaign called "Major Quality Cares" or "Major Thanks-for-Giving." Regardless, if you are an employee, volunteer, physician or board member, you are in the right place to learn about our annual internal giving campaign to the hospital foundation. While we have a campaign annually, gifts and pledges are gratefully accepted anytime.

About the Annual Internal Campaign
Each year, generally during the month of November, the Major Hospital Foundation offers the opportunity to our employees, volunteers, physicians, and hospital and foundation board members to make a gift to support Major Health Partners through the Foundation. A volunteer committee of employees works on the campaign, and the campaign kicks off with a fun event.

Current Project
Since uncompensated care continues to be one of the hospital's biggest challenges, the Foundation's main project continues to be patient assistance. In fact, the Foundation Board of Directors feels that providing assistance to patients in need is so important that they have created a group called the Major Hospital Foundation Development Council to work on this particular project. This is a group of about sixty community volunteers who are dedicated to gathering general goodwill for Major Health Partners as well as financial contributions. The Development Council has named the project "The Gift of Health Community Initiative."

Each gift received through the Gift of Health Community Initiative contributes to the health of our community's not-fo-profit hospital. But, more importantly, each gift contributes to the overall health and well-being of everyone in our community.

Major Hospital Foundation's Gift of Health Community Initiative is like no other in our history. It is not a project about acquiring the latest in medical equipment or about building new medical facilities. This is a project about people, our very own families, friends, neightbors, and co-workers, who are experiencing an honest hardship.

As a not-for-profit hospital, Major Hospital's mission is to provide quality healthcare to all who need it, regardless of the patient's ability to pay. Delivering on this promise, while at the same time remaining financial viable, has become a challenge. Increasing many individuals and families unable to cover their hospital expenses. During 2010, Major Health Partners provided $2,379,002 in care to patients unable to pay. This represents a 37 percent increase over 2009, and projections for a 23 percent increase in 2011 are becoming a reality.

As a result, Major Health Partners is in need of the generous support of donors in order to server the growing number of patients who are either uninsured or underinsured while at the same time continuing to grow, add services, and stay current with equipment, facilities, and technology. Without this growth, the existence of a quality healthcare system in Shelby County is threatened. This partnership between the community and hospital to serve those in need is the hallmark of a sustainable healthcare system.

You may choose any area of the Foundation's mission for your gift, of course, but please give special consideration to patient assistance this year. Gifts to patient assistance will:

  • Help provide a temporary "bridge" until long-term assistance is found for inpatients who need help so that they can purchase their prescriptions. This will help them avoid being readmitted to the hospital as well as improve their health and quality of life.

  • Help families struggling to meet basic needs avoid becoming over burdened by high medical debt.

  • Fund unexpected, incidental costs related to healthcare for patients who lack resources.

  • Help protect Shelby County's excellent healthcare system so that it will remain a viable source of quality healthcare for everyone in our community.

If you have questions about how the Gift of Health Community Initiative Funds will be administered, please contact Angela Gill in the Foundation office at 317-421-0361.

Your Gift
Employees are encouraged to make gifts through payroll deduction.  Simply indicate on your pledge card the amount you would like to have deducted from your paycheck to the foundation with each pay.  For example, if you would like to give $100 to the foundation over the course of a year, divide $100 by 24 pays for $4.17 to come from your check each pay.

Payroll deduction pledges made during the campaign will begin with the first pay in January. 2011 marks the first year for continuous giving. This means that once you sign up for a payroll deduction to the Foundation, it will continue indefinitely until or unless you change or stop it. You may do this anytime.

Volunteers and board members may elect to write one lump sum check to the foundation.  Simply attach the check to your pledge card and turn it in to Cindy Isaac in administration or mail it to the Major Hospital Foundation at 150 West Washington Street.  Employees may also make a one-time lump sum gift.

Volunteers and board members may also elect to pledge a certain amount and then spread payments out over the course of 2010.  If you would like, the Foundation can send you reminders when it’s time to make a payment.  Employees may also choose to make a gift in this manner.  Your pledge card will have a place for you to indicate if this gift method is your choice.

Gifts to the Foundation are tax deductible if you itemize.  Remember, you must claim the deduction on your tax return in order to receive it.  If you make a lump sum gift or give through payments, you will receive a written acknowledgement from the foundation that will satisfy IRS requirements for charitable gift deductions.  If you make your gift through payroll deduction, your last pay stub of the year will satisfy IRS requirements in the same way. The Major Hospital Foundation does not provide goods or services in whole or partial consideration for any contributions made by payroll deduction. (This is what makes these contributions tax deductible.)

Gifts of PDO
Employees may give a gift of PDO to the foundation. This way, you can make a gift, receive a tax deduction, and not change your take home pay. This may be an option for you this year if your budget is feeling stretched but giving is still important to you. Keep in mind the following:
  • A PDO gift will be made at your base rate only--no differentials will be included.
  • You must have a minimum of 80 hours in your PDO bank to donate (taking into consideration any hours that may have already been approved for time off).
  • A minimum PDO gift is two hours.
  • You will be taxed just as if you had used the PDO for vacation or other time off.
  • You might wish to keep in mind that the actual donation received by the foundation will be net of taxes. For example, if you give $100 in PDO and if $10 in payroll taxes are taken out, your gift to the foundation is $90.
  • A gift through PDO to the foundation is tax deductible if you itemize.
  • A payroll deduction will appear on your pay stub showing the gift. Save this stub for your tax return if you are going to claim the deduction.
  • PDO gifts will be deducted from your PDO bank one time only.
  • The PDO deduction to the foundation will occur before the end of the year in which it is made.
